I started with bees as a teenager in the mid 1970’s at my parents home in Mundelein, Illinois. I didn’t have a bee suit back then and wasn’t very adept in handling bees. I did collect a couple of swarms and learned what I could on my own. There were no varroa mites or small hive beetles in those days.

Middle Life. I joined the Air Force, so with moving every few years I thought it wouldn’t be a good idea to work with bees. After the Air Force, I moved to Sudden Valley and again skipped the bee route due to the lack of forage(although some folks are able to keep bees there). I moved again in 2014 to Everson where there was flat sunny land and plants everywhere. I like telling my story about standing in a swarm in the middle of the street with bees all around me. After that, I decided to give it a try again. I found it extremely difficult to find time for meetings and mentors were wanting consistent days and times to work the bees. Retail sales was nearly impossible to schedule around. I had no understanding of the devastation mites were causing and how to treat for them. I had failed for 3-4 years. I found time to work on education after ending Retail Sales and had an opportunity to work on WASBA classes and field days with a 30+ year beekeeper. I had worked on several positions in the Mt Baker Beekeeper Assn over 6 years. My mentor moved out of state and things changed.

A New Way. We started the North Cascade Beekeepers about a year ago to improve education programs, add flexibility to the apiary management and add a Queen Rearing program. My hope is that everyone will have a chance to try things they might not know about or wanted to try, but don’t have the equipment or experience to attempt it. The next year has new possibilities ready to try. We’re here for that opportunity. I grew up in Los Angeles California. One day at our elementary school, they brought a dairy cow in, to show us where milk actually comes from! I was so impressed with the seeing a real cow, I knew then that someday I was going to be a county girl! Now with 13 chickens, 4 goats, and bees – I’d say I have accomplished that!

About Bees. One year Husband thought that beekeeping would be a great new hobby for a husband wife team to do… At our peak of beekeeping years, we maintained close to 40 hives, including having several out yards. Every part of our property had bees this and bees that, including the insides of the house (as I snicker…). We also became active in several of the local bee club associations, including taking on various leadership roles.

Related Things. I have always been a creative, ambitious and proven self-learner. Soon I found out, that I was pretty good at doing nerdy things…like make newsletters and developing websites. So, while husband was taking care of all the bees, I focused more on marketing our own products, and developing websites.

Education. While I also helped out with our bees, I wanted to learn more about bees and because I worked a travel job, I was not able to commit to the local bee club educational courses. I started and completed the online Master Beekeeping Certification through University of Montana (UM). I really enjoyed that series of courses. I also was accepted and started the University of Florida Master of Science Entomology with Focus of Beekeeping program. In August 2024, I finished the UM Master Beekeeping Certification.

Life Pivot. I was on my way to completing the University of Florida Master of Science Entomology with Focus of Beekeeping program. Two months after I retired my Clinical Research Position, husband Bill had a stroke and other life-threatening events occurred soon afterward. Our lives changed 360 degrees instantly.

Rebuilding. As husband and I started to re-built our lives post stroke, we met with our close friends/fellow local beekeepers and agreed there was something very special that we (as a group) could bring to the local community to enhance beekeeping education. We then came together, bringing all of our unique talents together and formed North Cascade Beekeepers (NCB) Group, to help individuals become educated (and frugal) beekeepers. With our unique way, NCB focuses on helping others to become beekeepers including looking at the cost of keeping bees. I am very proud to be part of NCB Beekeepers helping Beekeepers!

North Cascade Beekeepers Honorable Mention

We thank all of our spectacular members who have joined North Cascade Beekeepers over this year!

Huge Thank You for all you have done for North Cascade Beekeepers and continued support: Russell Deptuch Sr., Neal Hughes, Bill Buce, Russell Buce, Eli Ocheltree/SnoKing Beekeepers Association and Growing Veterans.

This North Cascade Beekeepers (NCB) anniversary month of October, we look at several individuals who spearheaded the formation and development of North Cascade Beekeepers: Jon Moore and Gail Buce.
